German Shepherd Dogs Raise Baby Chickens As Their Own (Video)

German Shepherds are usually known for their loyalty and working skills; however, these German Shepherds from Gold Coast, Queensland, became known for something quite unusual.

Jax, Chewie, and Flint are long-haired German Shepherds. They were able to make friends with newly-hatched chickens, which was unusual for their breed.

If you have ever owned chickens, then you know that you need to protect them from all kinds of animals, foxes and big dogs, especially.

But, these pups are not your usual big dogs with a high prey drive – on the contrary, they act as dads to these baby chickens.

Parenthood Comes In Many Forms

There is a saying that parenthood comes in many forms, and in this case, it couldn’t be more true.

When the dog’s owners bought 10 little chicks, they were initially worried as to how the dogs were going to react.

They posted a little video of the dogs with the chicks on their Instagram profile and said, “Just trying to get the dogs used to them every day, so hopefully they become their friends & not their dinner.”

But, to their surprise, both dogs (Flint came to the family a bit later) took an instant liking to the baby chicks.

Generally, a German Shepherd may have the initial urge to hunt and kill the small animal, but with proper exposure, socialization, and correct training, it is not impossible for the two species to coexist normally.

To everyone’s surprise, almost all of the chicks were very inquisitive about the dogs and were cuddling with them almost immediately.

The dogs took their role very seriously and started to raise the baby chicks as if they were their parents.

They made sure their little kids were healthy, happy, and clean at all times by giving them their baths with a lot of tongue licks.

“Jax is truly the most gentle dog! I looked over today and saw all the chicks all over Jaxs paws, I started recording it, but it wasn’t until I got closer I realised Jax had his bone from this morning and was letting the chickens share it. Just Amazing!”, the owners wrote on the Instagram post.

The dogs quickly learned to be gentle with the little babies, and they were constantly watching over their kids, just like true dads.

The owners also did an amazing job by properly introducing the chickens to their dogs and teaching them how to behave.

Both Jax and Chewie seem to be natural parents, and they sure did make it easier for their owners.

Proud Dads

Jax and Chewie already had an Instagram account, but it wasn’t until their proud dad moment that they became famous.

Their account, which now even features their new brother, Flint, has more than 124K followers who enjoy keeping up with these incredible dogs and their chickens.

They post pretty regularly, so you can enjoy a variety of photos and videos of the dog’s day-to-day activities. Of course, chicks are also regularly featured.

The dogs are the best of friends with their little chicks, and they simply can’t imagine their life without them, not knowing how impressive their relationship actually is.

If you’d like to stay up to date with this quite unusual family, make sure to follow their Instagram (@chewie.jax.flint.the.gsds).
