5 Tips to Beat The Heat And Have A Breezy Dog Walk

Admin

Summer is here!

As much as that brings fun and happiness, it also brings high temperatures and possible dehydration. Since our furry friends aren’t as equipped to deal with the summer heat as we are, they depend on their two-legged friends to make their summer days as cool as they can be.

Whether you’re going for a brief stroll around the block, a hike, or simply to play in the park, here are some tips that will help make your summer quality time not only safe, but as enjoyable as ever.

#1 Plan Ahead

Regular walks and daily exercise are essential for your doggo’s health. During the summer, it is really important when you choose to take your dog out in the sun. The day is hottest around three p.m. so try and avoid this time of the day.

To beat the heat, opt for walking your dog during the cooler periods of the day, such as early morning or late evening.

However, regardless of the time, remember to keep your furry friend well-hydrated.

#2 Stay Protected

Heat-related issues like heatstroke and dehydration can be serious concerns for our canine companions.

When you venture out in the sun, protect your pup. Whether it’s by using a bandana, a cute little hat, or applying dog-safe sunblock, you will not only make them the coolest looking pup on the block, but you will also be protecting them from the harmful UV rays.

You can even put the clothing in the fridge to cool it down before putting it on that shiny fur coat. Just remember, comfort is key, and be careful with the sunscreen.

#3 Snack Time

Is there anything better than a tasty treat? Well, during the summer, there is a new kind of treat. A cold one! Give your pup some dog-friendly popsicles, watery fruits, or even some Fro-Yo. Not only will they get their daily hydration, but they will also cool down!

We are happy to give you some ideas and recipes right here.

#4 Ice, Ice, Baby

Water is the greatest gift of life. A cold cup of water is the best way to stay hydrated, but if you are taking a longer walk, the water might get too warm to be enjoyable, so here’s one tip:

Place half a water bottle in the freezer and let it freeze completely. Once you set out on your walk, fill up the rest of the bottle with water. As you walk, the ice will melt, making the water perfectly cool. Bring one for yourself as well!

Find a nice shade, rest, and enjoy.

#5 Be Careful And Be Aware

We know that life is unpredictable. If you do end up outside when it’s too hot, it is important to know the signs of a heat stroke.

Senior dogs, flat-faced breeds, and dogs fighting illnesses are at higher risk of a stroke so be careful. Early signs of a heat stroke may include rapid panting, slower walking, excessive drooling, or seeking shade and trying to lie down.

When a heat stroke progresses, dogs can develop pale, red, or blue gums, diarrhea, bleeding and blushing, difficulty breathing, and even seizures.

If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your local vet as soon as possible.

Final Word

Going for a walk during the hot summer days doesn’t have to be a task both you and your dog dislike. With a little planning, adaptation, and creativity, you can transform these hot walks into enjoyable and unforgettable experiences.

So, grab the water bottle, grab the sun block and, of course, grab your four-legged friend and embark on another adventure while wagging the heat away.
