Never underestimate the willpower of a stray dog fighting for life.
At least that’s what Sugar Snap would say if he could speak!
Sugar Snap was a lost cause when he was brought to the Chicago ER. At only 19 pounds of weight, he couldn’t stand, walk, or even lift his head up. It is safe to say that this helpless stray was only moments away from the inevitable, but he never gave up.
Today, Sugar Snap is a brand-new dog that dazzles absolutely everyone with his transformation.
This is his story!
From Noble Rescue To Miracle
In February 2024, a random passerby was driving their kid to school when they noticed Sugar Snap curled up on the ground. He immediately rushed into action and made what turned out to be a life-saving decision!
“A passerby was driving his son to school and saw something on the side of the road. Instead of continuing on, they chose to stop,” the dog’s rescuers wrote on Instagram.
From that moment on, Sugar Snap was taken by the kind team of One Tail At A Time Rescue, based in Chicago, Illinois, who spared no time or resources to help this dog thrive.
He spent weeks in the vet’s care, receiving blood transfusions and lots of care.
“Sugar Snap arrived 19lbs, unable to walk or lift his head up. He gave us plenty of scares at the emergency vet, receiving 2 emergency blood transfusions, a variety of testing, and so much supportive care. We didn’t know if he would make it but Sugar Snap showed us over and over again he wanted to live,” his rescuers wrote.
Despite being on the edge, the one thing Sugar Snap never lost was faith. He was a resilient boi throughout the entire process, eager to live and recover from his condition.
He was extremely malnourished, yet his eyes continued to spark, as if they were saying, “Thank you for saving me, kind hoomans!”
Sugar’s unbreakable spirit and sweetest personality made everyone in the hospital fall in love with him!
His caregivers would spend hours sitting next to him, giving him the sweetest cuddles and making sure he was not alone. As a result, Sugar Snap gave them the most amazing surprise just a couple of weeks after being admitted – he started to walk!
This was a turning point in his life, as from that moment on – he never looked back! Ever since that moment, he’s gained healthy weight and started to eat a lot better.
And, that’s when things got even better!
One of his vets, Dr. Richie, decided to foster this sweet boi and take care of him in her home.

On his way out, the ER staff prepared Sugar Snap the sweetest farewell ever!
“After exactly 20 days at the emergency vet, Sugar Snap has LEFT THE BUILDING!! His foster, one of the ER vets, took him home today to continue recovery,” the video says.
Welcome Home, Sugar Snap
Sugar’s new hoomans welcomed him in his new home with open hearts!
He even got two furry siblings – a 12-year-old dog, Fitz, and a cat brother, Noodle. With a big doggo brother around, Sugar soon picked up all the good manners and learned how to be a good boi.
He adapted to his new family within weeks and soon captivated the hearts of everyone. That ultimately resulted in the only way possible – his adoption!
The ODAT rescue posted a truly heartwarming video of Sugar Snap having his very own “Gotcha Day,” attended by all his friends and family!

His new pawrents decided to surprise him and give him a decent, official welcome into a forever home with Sugar’s favorite snacks and his best furriends.
Sugar’s former caregivers couldn’t be happier for this sweet boi. He finally found a way to a new life, and it got so much better than he’d ever imagined!
“We truly couldn’t have asked for a happier ending for this lucky Chicago stray,” the rescue wrote in an update post.
Today, Sugar Snap lives the best life possible.
He chases new adventures on a daily basis, exploring the world and enjoying the company of the people and furry buddies he now loves the most.
