My heart shatters into a million pieces every time I look at the photo of Sid begging for a chance with those sad, hopeful eyes.
Clinging onto his teeny-tiny kennel, this German Shepherd mix spent the last seven years in a New York shelter. Between two failed adoptions and endless nights of hoping for a new chance, Sid has become a big boi now.
He’s an adult dog, having spent exactly 1,244 days in the shelter. Yet, he has the spirit of a puppy who still longs for a hooman to love and cuddle!
Looking For A Forever Home Since 2017
Sid arrived at Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter, New York, in 2017 at only ten months of age. Within only a few months, this cheerful pup found a forever home, but his stay there didn’t last long.
“Sid originally came to us as a stray in 2017 when he was 10 months old; he quickly got adopted and then returned due to behavior issues,” the rescue stated on Facebook.
Sid’s excessive enthusiasm and energy turned into a real nightmare. When he got a new chance, his second adopter also decided to take him back for the same reason!
What was supposed to be a real shot at happiness turned into him spending countless days in a confined space, completely heartbroken.
In July 2024, an Instagram user, @adopt_ky_and_friends, posted a devastating video of Sid begging to be adopted from his kennel. His story soon spread all over the internet, with thousands of people getting familiar with his situation.

Luckily, Sid has come a long way since he was last surrendered. With the help of kind volunteers and an amazing team in the New York shelter, he worked hard on his behavioral skills and perfected being a good boi!
“He has lots of volunteer buddies at the shelter who have amazing things to say about him. He is an active boy who loves long walks, but also will make the best tv watching companion,” THAS wrote.
Sid Prefers A Low-Traffic Home
Sid still hopes to find a forever home. He spends his days waiting in the shelter, but has a lot of other things going on, too!
The staff makes sure he gets plenty of time outside. He’s definitely a nature lover and spends a lot of time on the lake, soaking up all the beauty. Sid is also a great companion on walks, and he gets rewarded with a delicious puppuccino every time!
However, his all-time favorite activity is accompanying his favorite hoomans on the couch. He loves to have quiet time and doesn’t mind lying for hours next to you while watching TV.
What he seeks in a potential home is space and having a lot of time for himself. Sid prefers to be the only dog in a home but doesn’t mind having a feline companion.
“Sid is looking for a low traffic home with adults only that are familiar with guarding in general. Sid never lived with another dog and prefers it that way but did live with a cat in his previous home,” the rescue added.
His caregivers would be more than grateful if he found a suitable home before he reaches the 2,000-day milestone at the shelter. He’s definitely a good boi who deserves a chance; he just needs someone who will understand him.
