When we think of police officers, we usually picture strong, scowling guys who have no emotions, but are only there to strictly do their job.
However, many cases often prove that this is just one of the stereotypes about this honorable profession since police officers also know how to express love and emotions.
Today’s story about a little dog who managed to bring one of the most touching smiles to an officer proves that.
Instead Of The Defendant, He “Arrested” A Cute Little Puppy
One day, Officer Marcus Montgomery, from the Fort Walton Beach Police Department, went to respond to a routine call at an animal shelter.
The problem was about some former employee making trouble at the shelter. When he came, the situation was fairly calm, so he just did an information interview.
Before heading back home from Panhandle Animal Welfare Society, he suddenly heard some whining from a distance, which was getting louder and louder. When he turned around, he saw a supervisor at the door holding a tiny puppy in his arms. It was a little pit bull.
“As soon as I saw him, I said ‘Don’t bring him in here, or else I will take him home right now.’” Marcus said in an interview for ABC News.
He was in real doubt because he already had one dog at home and didn’t know if he could afford another one due to his obligations.
However, when the supervisor told him the sad background story of this puppy, his heart no longer had doubts.
“The supervisor explained to me that he was left all alone in a box behind their building overnight,” said Montgomery. “During that time, we were achieving 30 and below weather, so just thinking about him out there all alone, probably so confused, broke my heart.”
After chatting it over with his partner, Kristen Marten, it was official. This puppy would be in foster care with them until he got old enough so they could adopt him!
These Dogs Are Proof That Stories About Pit Bulls Are Just Stereotypes
Instead of being in a cold box, this little pittie was finally in a warm home with his new, loving family.
There, in addition to Marcus’ partner, Kristen, who was delighted with the new, cute little member of the family, he was also welcomed by his new, older brother, also a Pit Bull, named Vader.
Marcus named this dog after one of the characters from his favorite Star Wars series, Darth Vader. Now, you can easily understand why their new rescue puppy was named Kylo, just like the character of this popular Sci-Fi series, Kylo Ren.
Before he found his forever home, Vader’s life was also not easy at all. He, too, is a rescue dog who, due to stereotypes towards Pit Bulls, spent a little more than a year in a shelter.
Just as Marcus was softened by the backstory of Kylo, he could not remain immune to the difficult fate of Vader after he had heard about it.
Fortunately, both of these stories had their happy ending. Not only did this dog and the puppy find their warm home and family, but they also found each other.
Given that they had similar fates, and that Vader was older than Kylo, he treated him like a father to a son.
Besides understanding him completely, he also taught him everything he knew, so Kylo constantly followed Vader and saw him as a role model.
The fate of both of these dogs changed overnight because one officer who was only doing his duty softened his heart.
This Cop And His Pittie Quickly Took The World By Storm
The whole story did not pass without media attention, and it was all started by PAWS, who posted a picture of the officer holding his new pet on their official Facebook page.
The picture quickly went viral and attracted the attention of not only people across the U.S. and the world, but also numerous well-known media companies.
This moving story was first reported by the well-known media outlet, ABC News, but it didn’t stop there. Portals like Time, Y! News, and others also joined in.
In his interview for Daily Democrat, Marcus revealed that he was also contacted by Good Morning America, among other TV news programs.
When asked why the photo became such a hit, Montgomery said he wasn’t really sure.
Although some people think that it is because the picture is so cute, we think that it is because the picture is a great counterbalance to negative stigmas often associated with both Pit Bulls and police officers.
And, Marcus also agrees with that statement. He said people were bound to react to the image of a police officer and a pup.
“I think when you put those two things together, people just gravitate towards that,” he said.
Whatever the reason, this story proved that stereotypes are there to be broken. And, those who brought them down with one touching story like this are precisely those who are most affected by them.
