In the many years I have been volunteering at shelters and writing about dogs, I have heard many foolish reasons for abandoning a dog, yet every time, I am shocked at how someone could do such a thing.
The story of an adorable little dog named Sadie adds another extremely foolish reason to my list – a broken backyard fence. Yes, you’ve read it right… a fence.
People often adopt pets without fully understanding the responsibilities that come with it, and then they simply choose to dump that pet at the slightest inconvenience.
Like it is some used good and not a living, breathing companion.
This is Sadie’s story, which thankfully has a happy ending, thanks to the amazing people who actually care about dogs.
Sweet Dog Named Sadie
Two-year-old Sadie ended up living at a shelter after her owners simply decided that they didn’t want to take care of her anymore.
“Sadie’s owners didn’t want to fix their backyard fence, so Sadie kept escaping. Instead of wanting to fix the problem, they chose to surrender her,” Madeline Bracken, a volunteer at the Glenn Heights Animal Shelter in Texas, told Newsweek.
After living with her owners for almost two years, Sadie was simply surrendered to the shelter because they didn’t want to maintain their backyard fence to the level necessary for a little dog not to escape.
The owners told the shelter that Sadie is an Alaskan Husky and Border Collie mix, but since she is so small, the shelter actually believes that she might be more of a Husky and Corgi mix.
As far as Huskies are concerned, they are basically little Houdinis. They love to jump the fence or dig under it to escape, but as a dedicated owner, you should know that and work with it.
Monica Salmeron, the shelter’s animal control officer, even tried to give the owners some very simple and inexpensive solutions to fix their fence, but they simply did not want to do it.
Sadie was heartbroken, terrified, and struggling to adapt to a life in the shelter.
“Sadie doesn’t want to be there. It’s loud from all the barking, and she’s alone 90 percent of the time, when you can really tell she’s just a family dog,” Bracken said.
She loves to cuddle and is a very gentle dog, so this experience was very difficult for her. This little girl just wanted a family that would love her like she loves everyone.
Numerous people told the shelter they would come and adopt her, but somehow, that was not happening.
After learning about Sadie’s heartbreaking story, Bracken decided to do something about it, so she made a video about this sweet little girl waiting for her forever home.
A New Forever Home
That video quickly blew up, giving Sadie newfound hope of finding the right person.
“She is a cuddle bug who is easy to walk on leash. She loves people and gets along well with other dogs. She is even house-trained. Sadie is fixed and ready to go,” Bracken said in the video.
She also mentioned that Sadie was put through temperament testing, which she passed with flying colors.
@thetrashytexan MEET SADIE! She came into the animal shelter because her owner didn’t want to maintain their backyard to the level necessary to prevent a small dog from escaping. We were told she is an Alaskan Husky and Collie mix BUT this girl is LITTLE! We are guessing she’s more of a husky/CORGI mix! Almost 2 years old. Need updated rabies vaccine. She is fixed. Good with kids. Good with other dogs. #AdoptDontShop #adoptdontshop🐾 #DogShelter ♬ original sound – TheTrashyTexan 🗑♻️🌍
“She cuddles on your lap even though she’s on the larger end of a small dog and likes to follow people around the animal shelter when given the chance to get out,” Bracken added.
Sadie deserved a miracle, and she finally got one!
After the video was posted on TikTok, and Newsweek did an article about her, the Glenn Heights Animal Shelter in Texas received over 81 calls asking about Sadie.
By the end of the day, Sadie was already at her new forever home.
Hopefully, Sadie will never experience something like this ever again, and that the new owners will be able to mend her little broken heart because this sweet girl deserves nothing but love!
