A chocolate Labrador Retriever from Malibu, California, definitely has the most unusual best friend ever.
When Lindsay, Slim’s mom, decided to move into a beach house, she never expected for her dog to acquire a fascinating sea friend.
However, one day, a wild sea lion came out of the ocean just in front of their house, and it was love at first sight.
From that moment on, this wild sea lion loves to visit his furry friend on the beach every morning.
The Unexpected Bond
Slim has always been more of a water dog. “He’s so much more comfortable in the water,” Lindsay told The Dodo.
Besides that, he’s not the type of dog that just goes up and makes friends. In fact, even when his mom took him to the dog park, he just didn’t want to play with other dogs.
Every dog is different and that is okay.
Water is just his natural habitat, which is not surprising at all because Labs were made for the water.
What is surprising is that Slim also has a natural bond with water animals, and he’s simply fascinated with them.
One day, both Lindsay and Slim were lying on the Malibu beach, when out of nowhere, a wild sea lion came out of the ocean and approached them. Slim was immediately fascinated by him.
However, although the sea lion seemed to be friendly, Lindsay knew that it was important for both her and Slim to stay at least 50 yards away from each other.
This was an extremely unique encounter.
“Then after that, I’m not even kidding, the sea lion showed up three to four times a week at least for two years. He would pop out of the water and just stare at him. It was really unbelievable. They had this really gentle, curious manner about them. They just wanted to be in each other’s company, and that was enough,” Lindsay said.
Forever In Their Hearts
For almost two years straight, both Slim and the sea lion enjoyed their daily encounters – just happily enjoying each other’s company.
Every time the sea lion came around, it was like the greatest surprise ever for Slim.
One day, however, Slim was patiently waiting for his best friend to visit, but the old sea lion had sadly crossed the rainbow bridge and was not coming back.
“We’d love to think that the sea lion came to rest in front of our house so that he could spend his final moments with Slim,” Lindsay said. “You can just learn so much from animals. I think that the biggest thing is that they live in the moment.”
These two shared an appreciation for each other, despite their immense differences. They were able to see past it and enjoy each other’s company and time spent together.
It was beautiful and definitely something we all can learn from.
