Dory, a German Shepherd dog, found herself in quite a pickle when she fell from a 300-foot-high vertical cliff from a hiking trail in Ecola State Park, in Cannon Beach, Oregon. After the fall, she was trapped on the rocks as the spot was only accessible by rappelling from the trail.
The prompt reaction of the United States Coast Guard once again proved that humans and dogs are indeed best friends in the world!
Dory Injured Her Hind Leg During The Fall
After her misfortunate fall, Dory injured her hind leg and couldn’t move from the rocky beach. The spot was located above a remote area of the beach, and it was inaccessible from the ground.
Around 7 P.M., the Fire Department received a call about stranded Dory, so the crew directed the call to the Coast Guard.
Heroic Act From The Coast Guard Air Station Astoria Crew
The Air Station from Astoria sprung into action promptly, sending a helicopter to the spot. About one-and-a-half hours after the call, the aircrew deployed a rescue swimmer and lowered him into the water.
He swam to the shore and safely approached Dory, who was terrified at the time. Waves were lapping at her while she was trying to stay away from the water, but due to her injury, she could barely move.
The rescuer, Clayton Maidlow, gently put her into the rescue basket and the two were hoisted up to the helicopter.
She had been there for quite a while. She’d been wet, cold, scared, hurting. At that point, I think she was just glad to see someone else there with her, says Clayton.
Scared, But Thankful To Be Rescued
Even though she was still shocked from the very fall and the fact that she was stranded on a rocky beach all by herself, Dory acted very docile during the rescue.
When she finally made it to the helicopter, she was extremely friendly, as if she was thanking the crew for rescuing her.
Dory’s owner was so relieved when she finally touched the ground. She hugged Clayton and thanked him and the entire crew for saving this gorgeous doggo girl.
After such a traumatic experience, Dory was finally safe with her owner. She was subjected to leg treatment shortly after the rescue.
Luckily, this doggo girl had no significant injuries and no bones broken. Considering the height of the cliff she fell from, Dory’s fairly good condition was basically a miracle.
During the last year, this heroic crew has been doing an amazing job, saving at least five people from the same spot where this German Shepherd girl was found.
We wish Dory a quick recovery and lots of love in her cozy, Oregon home. She sure deserves it!
