Guide dogs are truly remarkable in every possible way.
They help those in need, make their lives easier, and ask nothing in return except love and kindness. There’s a special bond between these special dogs and their special people.
As we all know, not every pooch is fit to become a guide dog. It takes time, training, and a sprinkle of talent. Guide dog trainers are able to spot puppies that would be pawfect for their programs even at the early age of only a couple of weeks.
Such pups get a different program of upbringing, and their training starts.
One of those extra special pups is Unity, a three-year-old German Shepherd. But, it’s not her expertise in guidance that made Unity so popular.
It was the fact that she got to be one incredible doggy mommy, giving birth to the biggest litter of future guide pups ever!
How Many Is Too Many?
When it comes to guide dogs, I say it’s never enough. The world needs these exceptional pups.
Unity blessed us all by giving birth to more puppies than we all thought was possible.
German Shepherds normally reach maturity at the age of 2 years. Around this time, most GSD girls experience motherhood for the first time. An average GSD litter usually contains around 8 puppies.
But, Unity was no ordinary dog. She was a record-breaker, but she wasn’t aware she’d become one.
The winter of 2021 brought a giant surprise to Unity and her pawtner… a six-year-old Golden Retriever named Trigger. Unity was expecting puppies.
The entire staff of Guide Dogs, a program that has been handling guide dogs for more than 60 years, was surprised, too. Unity was expecting a huge litter of puppies! Even the vets weren’t sure how many pups were packed inside.
When Unity started giving birth to her little ones, the staff expected it would end soon. But, Unity just kept popping them out. The first-time-mommy pushed out 16 pawdorable critters and she couldn’t have been happier.
It was the biggest litter Guide Dogs had ever seen!
Unity did not break the Guiness World Record, which is still 24 puppies born in one litter, in Cambridgeshire, back in 2004. Still, she did break her organization’s record!
Her pawtner, Trigger, also became a record holder. This was his 28th litter, meaning he had 239 kids so far!
The puppies, of course, stayed with Guide Dogs, and they will all be a terrific addition to the organization once they grow up.
What else can I add other than this is more proof of how incredible guide dogs are!
