This is a special one. It’s a tale of a broken dog who was abused by the cruel world that he was living in.
More importantly, it is a story of hope, and how a sad and lonely dog continued believing that everything would turn out well for him despite going through so much.
Abandoned and Broken
Sanford didn’t have it easy in life. A few years ago, he was in a terrible accident. He got hit by a car, and was brought to an animal shelter in Dallas, Texas.
Because there were a lot of problems with a great number of animals there, he did not receive any of the medical attention he really needed after going through a horrible thing.
For one full week, he just sat there in pain and suffering because no one could help him at the time. To make matters worse, Sanford was also shot in the leg and could barely move.
For a while, it seemed like he didn’t care about anything – like he had given up because of how he was treated, but there was more to that.
The Dallas volunteers found Sanford and quickly took him to a veterinarian, so that they could finally treat his injuries.
Patti Dawson, the executive director of Dallas DogRRR, said in an interview for The Dodo: He was physically broken, and when the volunteer went to see him, he didn’t really make any effort to come and say hello.
A Heartwarming Smile
Not long after his injuries were treated and he was starting to mend, he was taken in by Karen Velazquez.
When Sanford finally realized that no more trouble would be coming his way and that he was safe, he started to relax.
The woman who adopted him said that he was the happiest dog she had, despite already fostering over 50 dogs.
Vasquez told The Dodo:
He looks at me in a way that no other animal or human has ever looked at me, including my own pets. Essentially, the only time he is not smiling is when he is asleep or eating.
He is now a very cheerful and charming dog who loves to cuddle and play.
If you are wondering about his full story, you’ll be happy to know that Sanford found his forever family not too long after being taken in at the Dallas Dog Rescue.
He was adopted in October 2019, and has been living his best life ever since. I wish him and his new family all the best.
