An adorable little puppy was rescued by firefighters in a harrowing incident that highlights the dangers of leaving pets in locked vehicles during scorching summer days.

No matter how much officials warn people not to leave their pets locked in their cars during hot summer days, these things sadly still happen.

This heart-rending episode highlights the critical need for pet owners to prioritize the well-being of their furry companions, and it should serve as a reminder of the dangers associated with such negligence.

East Haven Fire Department firefighters rescued a 6-month-old Beagle puppy from a locked car during an incredibly hot summer in August 2023.

According to WFSB, the puppy was found by a citizen near Town Beach. The car’s owner couldn’t be located, so the fire department was called.

A swift response from the East Haven Fire Department led to the rescue of the puppy, who was then surrendered to the city’s animal control department.

The rescue quickly captured the town’s attention and made national headlines.

It was noted that East Haven Mayor, Joseph A. Carfora, and his office, received multiple calls from concerned citizens asking for the puppy to be adopted by the town.

It was agreed that the East Haven Fire Department would be the puppy’s new home, thanks to police chief, Ed Lennon, and fire chief, Matt Marcarelli’s enthusiasm of the idea.

“He has a great temperament and will get along with the on-duty crews as well as be an ambassador to the department at public education and community events,” Mayor Joseph A. Carfora said.

After announcing the newly-adopted Station Support Dog, the only thing left to do was choose its name.

East Haven residents were invited to participate in this important task. Over 7,000 people voted and picked the name for the newfound furry companion.

Surpassing four other choices, the winning name for the Station Support Dog was Riggs – the most common name for a fire truck.

Fire Chief, Matt Marcarelli, said in a statement:

“The East Haven Fire Department is deeply grateful to the residents of East Haven for taking the time to participate in this endeavor. Each vote not only solidified a name but also underscored the vital role the community plays in fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie within the fire department.”

Mayor Carfora, the Fire Chief, and the Police Chief all emphasized the importance that a support dog like Riggs has in reducing the stress and trauma firefighters experience on a daily basis.

Mayor Joseph A. Carfora also enthusiastically added, “He is an official ambassador for the department and the residents. Riggs is an Eastie now.”

Riggs will live among the crews, and vet care, food, and other related expenses will be funded through donations to the department, according to Chief Marcarelli.

“As Riggs settles into his new role, the department looks forward to the positive impact he will have on the well-being of the firefighters and the broader community,” said in the statement.

It is such an amazing upgrade for little Riggs to go from almost dying in the 122-degree car at the beach to having an amazing home surrounded by many people (and the whole community) that adore him.
