Losing an owner is a major tragedy for every dog. That feeling of insecurity and being left on their own, while at the same time, needing to learn how to fend for themselves is a trauma that very few dogs recover from.
Donna Lochmann, the chief life saving officer from Stray Rescue of St. Louis, had the chance to meet one of these canines several months ago.
The female doggo was left in an abandoned house by her former family, but that wasn’t even a big surprise! When Donna entered the yard of the said house, she was shocked to find a two-set, fluffy surprise!
Donna Spots Two Infant Sets Of Eyes Watching Her
Just a couple of yards away from their mama, two sets of eyes were staring towards Donna and her rescue team. Turns out the female stray they came to save had a litter recently, and now the family of three was left to fend for themselves.
Luring the mom dog to the car was the easy part, as she was already so hungry and emaciated that she accepted an extended hand of friendship quickly. However, picking up her newborns (around 6 to 8 weeks old) was the harder part of the mission!
The Rescue Mission Was No Picnic
The two were hiding under a patio on the other side of the fence and it was quite difficult to collect them. Scared and nervous, the puppies refused to get in the car with their mom, but Donna didn’t want to give up.
She stuck her arm underneath and, after a few tries, she successfully grabbed the smaller puppy. Still, the bigger one didn’t budge, and he even bit her a couple of times while she tried to help him.
This time, Donna used a thick glove to protect her arm and give the rescue one more try. Fortunately, this time, she made it, and now the whole family was safe!
“This is one of the sweetest mamas we’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. However, one of the grumpiest little puppies we’ve ever met (poor baby was just scared). All are safe now,” the SRSL team wrote on their Facebook.
Pumpkin Patch And Her Babies In A Foster Home
The mom was named Pumpkin Patch, and her other two puppies, Eckert and Stuckmeyer.
After the initial vet checkup, all three were declared healthy and ready for a foster home!
Waiting For The Pawfect Home
The babies, Eckert and Stuckmeyer, went to a wonderful foster home where they were properly cared for and socialized with several adult dogs. Even though they were initially scared, they soon adapted and started learning how to “dog.”
Not too long after, both puppies were successfully adopted into loving homes.
On the other hand, Pumpkin Patch was transferred to a separate foster home, where she is now. Recently, Marianne, one of the volunteers in St. Louis, Missouri, posted about this sweet mama, informing the public about her current situation.
“She took great care of her babies. They’re all adopted and now it’s Pumpkin Patch’s turn. She is currently in a foster home and doing great.
She is 100% house trained and does well in her crate. She also does well with children, cats and chill dogs. She’s not too keen on playful dogs that are too rough,” wrote Marianne.
After all the hardship she has been through, we really hope that Pumpkin Patch won’t need to wait long until she goes to a home she surely deserves.
