Unfortunately, many dogs are forced to leave their families and end up abandoned on the street only because their pet parents didn’t have the means to take care of them anymore.
The doggo of today’s story experienced exactly that. However, thanks to the efforts of his local shelter, she and her mom got another chance of a life spent together.
Dog With A Note
When a lost dog was wandering the streets of Tennessee looking for shelter, she came across a kind soul who simply couldn’t let her spend one more night on the street. Lilo, the dog, was taken into McKamey Animal Center (MAC) for some well-deserved care.
Upon some inspection, a note was found on Lilo’s leash, telling the story of her life.
The note read:
My name is Lilo. Please love me. My mom can’t keep me and is homeless with 2 kids. She tried her best, but can’t get help. I cost too much for her. She really loves me & I’m a great dog & love to be loved on. Please don’t abuse me.
The amazing folks at MAC were so touched by this story that they simply couldn’t stop thinking about how Lilo’s mom was doing. So, they took to their Facebook and wrote a message to her, saying:
We are so sorry that you had to make the decision to leave [Lilo] behind. We know many folks are struggling to care for their pets right now. We know how hard it must be to give up an animal you so clearly loved because you can’t provide the care she needs. We understand. We want you to know she is safe, and we will take the very best care of her. She will be loved by our staff and volunteers, we will keep her name, and we promise you we will do our best to find her a wonderful new home. But, if you are reading this, we hope you will come forward to reclaim her. We will help you with whatever you need to care for her, to the best of our ability. Lilo definitely misses you, and we would like nothing more than to see her go back to the family she loves. Either way, please know that we understand, we will not judge, and we are here to help in any way we can.
Just a couple of days later, this heart-warming post reached Lilo’s mom and she was able to reconnect with her beloved pup.
A Second Chance
The way she embraced Lilo clearly showed that she still had so much love for her and that the decision to leave her behind broke her heart.
The incredible people of MAC just keep on giving. They decided to take care of Lilo until his mom gets back on her feet and is able to provide for Lilo’s needs.
Additionally, the story of Lilo served as a wake-up call for them, so they created a fund that will help families and their pets stay together when faced with homelessness and financial hardship.
According To The Law
Lilo and her mom are not the only ones who are met with such circumstances. Many hoomans are forced to leave their furry friends behind when they are no longer able to provide for them financially.
Abandoning an animal is illegal, but more importantly, it should never have to be an option, MAC wrote.

This is just another story which reminds us about the honest and important efforts animal shelters put into our furry companions.
