Early Sunday morning, a police officer was patrolling the city when a Fort Wayne Police Department dispatcher notified him that they had received a call from a concerned citizen.
Namely, on the edge of the pond next to a local park in Fort Wayne, Indiana, something black was peeking out of the icy water, and loud barking could be heard from that place.
When Officer Trent Hullinger heard this, he immediately guessed what it was and quickly headed to that location, hoping it wouldn’t be too late.
Good Soul In The Uniform
As soon as Officer Hullinger set foot on the grass of the park and glanced into the distance, he immediately saw not one, but two black heads at the edge of the pond. As he got closer to the place, the barking got louder and louder.
When he finally got there, he realized that those were the cries for help of two black Labradors who were helpless to do anything on their own.
“Both dogs appeared to be unable to get themselves out of the water as their heads and front paws were clinging to the concrete edging surrounding the water,” the police department wrote.
In addition, the temperature had dropped to 34 degrees Fahrenheit, so these poor fellows were shivering from the cold. However, they bravely held their ground and stood by one another’s side, all the while until the officer came.
He slowly approached them and held out his hands to take them out of the cold water. With the help of the officer, a lab first emerged to the surface and immediately shook off the wetness, circling around his savior with satisfaction.
Immediately after that, the officer pulled the other lab out of the water, and both of them, excitedly jumping around him, followed him to safety.
Toward Better Days
After the successful rescue operation, the officer immediately notified Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control in Fort Wayne, Indiana, about this case, and they soon took over these canine fellows.
They were unable to determine how and why two Labradors found themselves in this situation. Fortunately, a brave man in uniform was in the right place at the right time to save their precious lives.
“We are happy the officer was able to rescue them before their health declined,” a spokesperson for Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control told The Dodo.
Police and shelter employees tried to find the owner of these two dogs, but sadly, no one came forward to claim them. That’s why they transferred them to the city’s animal shelter, where they will receive everything they need until full recovery.
“They are doing well and thankfully in great health,” the spokesperson said.
If the owner does not contact them, these two brave Labradors will soon be ready for adoption. Their savior, as well as the people who care for them, are convinced that these canine fellows will have their happy ending.
However, it would be wonderful if they started their new lives next to each other, just as they stuck together in their most difficult moments.
All of us can only wish them luck.
