Crossing paths with an abandoned puppy is always heartbreaking, let alone crossing paths with a whole litter!
Thousands of fragile puppies are out there, fending for themselves after being dumped by irresponsible owners, and without assistance, their chances to survive are low.
One such story comes from Alabama, where a man came upon six furry infants that required prompt intervention. Motherless, scared, and all covered in serious mange, the litter was left at the mercy of the woods, with odds stacked against them.
A Litter In Desperate Need Of Help
A kind-hearted man was on his daily commute when he spotted these six furballs in the woods. At the moment, he couldn’t even tell what these babies were, as their skin was extremely pink and they hardly looked like dogs.
With the mother nowhere to be found, the pups needed help, and the man rushed into action to help them! He brought them to the nearby shelter in Sylacauga, Alabama, and the staff made sure they got the much-needed care.
However, these puppies needed more than regular doggo care, as their condition was pretty bad, and the shelter had no resources to provide them with extensive medical care.
Impossible To Identify
Jaquie Cobb, of Second City Canine Rescue, from Illinois, saw the post from the shelter, pleading for help, and they reacted immediately.
“They were abandoned in the woods when they were too young to be away from their mother,” SCCR wrote.
The team couldn’t detect their real breed at the time, but they were absolutely sure that the puppies had to be a small breed.
They were no more than 5 pounds when they were brought to the facility, and based on their appearance, the team thought they were all Cocker Spaniels.
These six babies were further transferred to Auburn Veterinary College, where they were treated for sarcoptic mange.
According to Nicole Zaguroli, from SCCR, they were all so smelly that they had to wear masks in order to bathe them, but after extensive care and medical baths, they started recovering.
With proper meals, these resilient canines felt so much better, and their curly fur began to cover their bodies. Still, the question was – what breed were they?
The team made a guess that the puppies were Poodle mixes due to the little amount of curly hair they had, but they were wrong!
Shocking DNA Test Results
Once they finally did a DNA test, they were quite shocked!
All of the six puppies were one-hundred percent Great Pyrenees, which was completely opposite of what they assumed in the first place.
Soon enough, the tests were “justified” by the puppies’ rapid growth, as all of them started putting on weight, and they slowly started growing into pawdorable white giants!
The pups were split between two fosters who decided to provide them with temporary homes, and they soon started learning basic puppy manners and socialization.
In just a few short months, the pups transformed into active, pawsitive dogs that were ready to meet their forever families… and soon enough, it happened!
All of them went to forever homes, where they embraced their new families in a heartbeat!
Today, the pups are steadily building towards their expected 100-pound weight, but one thing is for sure – they will always remain the sweetest, most childish lovebugs at heart!
