Standard Schnauzer Breeders: Top 5 Options

Does the USA have any good standard Schnauzer breeders? How can I find Schnauzer puppies from good, AKC breeders?

I bet these questions are wondered about by all Schnauzer lovers from the States.

The truth is, the Schnauzer dog breed doesn’t enjoy the same popularity as some other dog breeds, like German Shepherds or Golden Retrievers.

But, with their exceptional character and some amazing personality traits, Schnauzers can be as good pets as any other dog breed.

If you’re a Schnauzer lover that wants to adopt one of these precious babies, then you’ll be grateful for this list of the top 5 standard Schnauzer breeders in the USA.

Standard Schnauzer Puppies For Sale In The USA

Bear in mind that the following breeders work only to improve the breed and follow their passions. Profit is the least important thing for these people, but you’ll see that for yourself once you contact them.

1. Shana Standard Schnauzers, SC

The love for standard Schnauzers started a few decades ago for these breeders, precisely, in 1987. This was the year when Lana the Schnauzer entered the lives of Shana from Shana’s Standard Schnauzers. Thus, a breeding program was born and the Shana team has been in love with these sweet dogs ever since.

Shana’s mission is to produce puppies with exceptional health. And trust me, they’re truly managing to bring only the best litters into the world.

Shana’s Schnauzers aren’t just excellent family members. They are also superior in show rings, their conformation, agility, and obedience.

These guys encourage you to adopt a purebred Schnauzer. They’re dogs that are absolutely worthy of your attention. And, what’s even better, they show affection in return.

Shana’s Schnauzers are registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC). Their breeding stock consists of champion doggos that were, or still are being, shown.

All puppies are tested for brucellosis, thyroid issues, as well as heart problems. They have OFA and CERF health certifications for hip and eye disorders.

Their puppies are handled daily, so proper socialization is ensured. All puppies (except show ones) are sold only with a spay/neuter contract.

Coming from Northern California, the Castlewood Standard Schnauzers are one of the finest breeders of this dog breed in the entire USA. Castlewood breeds exceptional Schnauzers that will become someone’s family pets. But, what makes them so special?

Ever since 2011, Castlewood has been focused on breeding only the best of the Schnauzer dog breed. Castlewood breeds healthy Schnauzers of stunning beauty. But, what lies inside these pups is even prettier. It’s their temperament!

Each puppy is submitted to ENS or Early Neurological Stimulation. Puppies are trained individually by professionals, making sure they will adapt into new homes without any issues.

It’s the passion for the breed, not money, that places Castlewood at the top of the ladder.

3. Skansen Kennels, CA

At Skansen Kennels you’ll find not only our standard Schnauzers, but giant, miniature, and white miniature Schnauzers too!

It all started back in the 1950s in Sweden, when Sylvia Hammarstrom began breeding little Schnauzers. The breeding business survived the move to California in 1964. They’ve been going strong ever since.

Today, Skansen Kennels have over 100 acres of land, where all kinds of Schnauzers roam freely. The reason why I chose Skansen Kennels as one of the top standard Schnauzer breeders in the USA is their 45-year-long experience.

For over 50 years, this kennel has been at the absolute top of the Schnauzer breeding game, producing champion bloodlines. Giant Schnauzers are dominating this place, but you will find over 10 examples of miniature and standard Schnauzers too.

A team of hardworking people is in charge of keeping the puppies fed, healthy, groomed, and exercised regularly.

If you’re interested in Skansen’s standard Schnauzers, you will need to pay $2,100 for an uncropped puppy or $2,800 for a cropped puppy. These are pet-quality prices.

Show-quality uncropped dogs cost $2,700, while cropped ones are much more expensive and they’re listed at $3,500.

As you can see, cropping dictates the price, as well as the dog’s predispositions.

4. Himmlisch Standard Schnauzers, CO

Since 1983, Himmlisch standard Schnauzers have been madly in love with the standard version of the wire haired Pinscher.

Kathi and Roy have devoted their entire lives to breeding and raising Schnauzers. And given the chance, they wouldn’t do anything differently. The couple’s first dogs Weizer, Schniken, and Himmel were an excellent starting point for them in many dog shows. These champion pups were an inspiration to keep up their good work.

Over the years, the couple has had 14 standard Schnauzers and over 75 champion titles. Kathie likes to say that she does all the hard work, training, as well as entering the ring. Roy is there for moral support and heavy lifting.

As members of the Standard Schnauzer Club of America (SSCA), Katie and Roy have received several awards and acknowledgements, mainly for their ethical work.

These guys aren’t serial breeders. They breed only occasionally, making sure all their puppies are of excellent health, fine temperament, and socialized since their early beginnings.

If you decide to get a Himmel Schnauzer, you should know that they will have all the necessary health certificates, including CERF and OFA.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find information about their pricing, but the couple will be more than happy to answer all your questions regarding their prices, the puppies, breeding program, etc.

5. Maximillian Schnauzers And Ooh La La Frenchies, FL

Grief isn’t necessarily bad for us. Good things can happen that can pull us up from the mud and give us a new perspective on life. That’s what happened to Vera, the founder of Maximillian Schnauzers and Ooh La La Frenchies.

Even though she was a dog person her whole life, breeding and raising professional puppies didn’t happen for Vera until a tragedy struck her family. Her husband Max sadly passed away in 2009. To keep her going, Vera bought her first 3 Schnauzers. They helped her to feel normal again.

Those 3 Schnauzers soon became 10, and then 20. Today, Maximillian Schnauzers are actually a big team of highly professional experts that keep an eye on the Schnauzer family. Recently, Max’s Schnauzers got an addition, in the form of adorable French Bulldogs!

Vera isn’t your average breeder. She makes sure that all her puppies are born and raised in the warmth of a home. They’re handled daily, and she makes sure that their development accords with all standards.

Head off to her website, where you’ll find all the necessary information about buying a Maximillian Schnauzer, as well as live cams, which truly blew me away. Seeing puppies interacting with the team daily is something you’ll definitely want to see.

FAQS

What Type Of Dog Is A Standard Schnauzer?

What was once called the Wirehaired Pinscher, is now a standard Schnauzer. But, what type of dog is this?

The standard Schnauzer is a working dog from Germany. It dates back to the 14th and 15th centuries. This dog, with such a rich heritage, was once used as a herding dog and an excellent watchdog for keeping cattle and properties safe.

Also, Schnauzers served as guard dogs and vermin exterminators. As you can see, they were very useful. Later on, Schnauzers were effective as military and police canines.

Today, the standard Schnauzer is a terrific family dog, focused on their loved ones, and dedicated to serving them as great companion dogs.

What Is The Average Price For A Schnauzer Puppy Of Standard Size?

Since they are distinguished as three different Schnauzer types (miniature Schnauzer, standard Schnauzer, and giant Schnauzer), it’s only natural to expect differences in terms of prices.

The standard Schnauzer isn’t as expensive as you might think. Compared to some other dog breeds, standard Schnauzers are affordable, since they range from $1,500 to $2,500 per puppy.

Of course, you can always find Schnauzers that will cost you more than the average price range suggests. Here, we’re talking about pet-quality Schnauzers. Show dogs, Schnauzers bred for confirmation, and exceptional working dogs, will always be priced higher.

The important thing is not to fall for cheap prices and buy Schnauzer puppies that are under $1,000. It’s more likely that such puppies are prone to severe health problems, like hip dysplasia or epilepsy.

What Is The Average Size Of A Standard Schnauzer?

Of the three Schnauzer breeds, standard Schnauzers fall into the medium range.

According to their breed standard, standard Schnauzer males can grow to be up to 18-20 inches tall at the withers. Females are slightly smaller and range from 17-19 inches.

Schnauzer males will weigh from 35-50 pounds, while females range from 30-45 pounds. As you can see, the differences between the two genders aren’t that significant.

What’s The Average Life Expectancy Of A Standard Schnauzer?

A Schnauzer’s lifespan is pretty impressive. These dogs can live from 13-16 years! Isn’t that great?

Invest in good dog food, take your dog to see your vet regularly, and give them lots of love. That’s the only way your dog can live his best life.

Why Should You Own A Standard Schnauzer?

Once you see how pawmazing Schnauzers are, you will wonder why you didn’t get one before.

Standard Schnauzers aren’t that common. In fact, we don’t even have that many Schnauzer breeders in the States. But, a small community of admirers has somehow found a way to make Schnauzers popular.

In case you’re still not familiar with this dog breed, I will show you why you need a Schnauzer in your life.

They Don’t Shed Much

Just like their former name suggests, standard Schnauzers have a wiry coat with a soft undercoat. What’s so great about dogs with this coat type, is that they shed minimally. You only need to brush them a couple of times a week.

No mess around the house. No loose hair all over the place.

People prone to dog allergies will find Schnauzers to be a delight, since they don’t shed and don’t drool at all. This dog breed is, in fact, considered to be hypoallergenic. Isn’t that awesome?

Superior Intelligence

One thing that most dog owners worry about is getting their dogs trained. I completely understand why. Many dog breeds are too stubborn to even listen to basic commands.

Luckily, that’s not the case with the Schnauzer breed. I’m really happy to inform you that Schnauzers are highly intelligent creatures. They will master any task you give them. The learning process won’t take too long and you’ll be stunned with how amazing Schnauzers are!

A Confident Watchdog

Schnauzers might not be large, but they still make good dogs for keeping guard and alerting their owners. They’re sturdy-built dogs that will let you know something’s wrong the moment they sense it.

However, don’t expect your Schnauzer to jump on a stranger and attack him. They’re not vicious, just alert and ready to keep an eye on you.

What Are The Top 3 Reasons Why The Standard Schnauzer Might Not Be For You?

The miniature Schnauzer posing outdoor

It’s not all sugar-coated. Schnauzers have some downsides, just like any other dog breed. I recommend that you check out both the good and bad sides of this dog breed before you decide to bring a Schnauzer into your life.

Who knows; maybe some of the following traits could be a sign that the standard Schnauzer isn’t the dog for you.

A Firm Hand

You can get a Schnauzer as your first dog, but I recommend that you don’t. These fury buddies need a firm hand, someone that will guide them as their leader. They want discipline, otherwise they will turn into dominant menaces.

Schnauzers are a better choice for people that already have some experience in handling and raising dogs.

Health Issues

When you buy a Schnauzer, you have to make sure there are no hereditary health issues with your puppy. Why? Because Schnauzers are already prone to some major health problems.

Schnauzers are especially susceptible to conditions like kidney stones, thyroid problems, pancreatitis, ear and skin infections, hip dysplasia, etc. So, yeah, expect a hefty bill from your vet.

High Energy Levels

Schnauzers are energetic dogs. They need active owners that can follow them on their daily adventures. Don’t expect Schnauzers to lie around all day long. They want activities, like jogging, playing in the park, playing games, and other interesting tasks to complete.

If you don’t lead an active life, maybe a Schnauzer isn’t the right fit for you.

To Sum Up…

I have a hunch that the demand for good standard Schnauzer breeders will soon increase.

The world needs to know that behind that quirky Schnauzer look, lies a sweet, caring soul worthy of your love and time.

Schnauzers are truly remarkable dogs. Once you have a Schnauzer in your life, you’ll see what I’m talking about.
