In the world of mixed dog breeds, the Chihuahua Husky mix takes a very special place. Crossing such a small dog with a medium-sized dog is difficult to begin with. Although it might seem impossible, we’re here to show you that it is, in fact, very possible!
The Chihuahua Husky mix isn’t a result of accidental crossbreeding, which is the case with most crossbreeds. Due to the huge difference in size, Siberian Huskies and Chihuahuas can’t naturally mate.
So, developing this designer dog took some effort. The Husky-Chi was made with the help of science, specifically with artificial insemination (AI) and in-vitro fertilization (IVF) methods.
This unusual hybrid dog hasn’t made it to the most popular mixed dog breeds yet, but it has become quite popular in the last couple of years.
Many paw lovers are curious about this mixed breed, and that is understandable. I was also wondering what would result from crossing two such different dog breeds.
Turns out, we got the most adorable puppy in town – the Husky-Chi!
Meet The Husky-Chi

The Husky-Chi is a mixed breed dog derived from a purebred Siberian Husky and a purebred Chihuahua.
This dog breed is also known by the names ‘Huskyhuahua’ and ‘Chi-Husky’. We’ll stick to the Husky-Chi name because it’s just as cute as this little hybrid dog!
Considering it is a mixed dog breed, the Chihuahua Husky mix puppy inherited a combination of its parent breeds’ personality traits.
You probably already know about the Siberian Husky’s howling and fun nature, and the Chihuahua’s sassy but loving attitude.
But, if you’re considering getting a Chihuahua Husky mix puppy, we’ll have to get deeper into the parent breed’s characteristics.
Chihuahua Husky Mix Parent Breeds
Here, we have two purebred dogs that don’t even nearly look alike. The size difference is almost incomparable!
So, why on earth did breeders think, “Oh, this might actually be a good combination”?
Well, it’s because they knew about many similar personality traits that Siberian Huskies and Chihuahuas have in common.
Siberian Husky
The Siberian Husky is one of the most popular purebred dogs in the world. Bred as working dogs in cold Siberia, Huskies have been loyal human companions for over 3000 years.
Known for their loving and hard-working personality traits, they have been favored dogs of the Chukchi tribe for hundreds of years.
These fluffy companions helped their humans with daily tasks, such as hunting and sled-racing.
Size and appearance
The Siberian Husky is a medium-sized dog. Male Huskies usually weigh between 45 and 60 pounds, whereas female Huskies weigh a few pounds less – 35 to 50.
The Siberian Husky male is a few inches bigger than the Husky female, reaching up to 23 inches in height.
Its anatomy is well developed and balanced. The body is muscular, although that can’t be clearly seen from the fluffy coat. However, the athletic body is perfect for running and endurance.
With a double-layered, thick coat, this sled dog is made for winter. Siberian Huskies love snow and ice because that’s the natural environment they come from.
Because they originate from a very cold place, their coats come in three main coat lengths: short, plush, and wooly. The plush coat is medium length, and it’s the most common coat type.
Siberian Huskies come in neat coat color variants; the most common being the black and white color combination. Other coat colors include white and agouti, gray, sable, and red.
What makes this fluffy pooch stand out is its mesmerizing blue eyes. The blue eyes can come in different shades – from light to dark blue. The eyes can also be brown.
Temperament
I always find myself looking at funny Siberian Husky videos on the internet. I’m always in awe of how these dogs are so silly and so outgoing. Sometimes, it seems as if they’re talking to their owner.
So, Siberian Huskies are talkative little furballs. They also like to howl very loudly, which can be annoying at times, especially to the neighbors!
This dog is highly intelligent; maybe even too intelligent. The Siberian husky is a fast learner and loves having a job to do.
It’s a great family dog that gets along with young children. It has a strong prey drive, so it is advisable to keep an eye on small animals as well small children when your Husky is around. Sometimes, this fluffy dog gets too excited, and it can chase other animals and humans.
Siberian Husky dog owners will describe this pooch as the best dog out there! The Husky is fun, loyal, friendly, sometimes stubborn, and independent.
Chihuahua
The Chihuahua is a small national dog of Mexico. This dog is tiny… I mean, very tiny. But, its personality is huge!
It’s a purebred dog that has a pretty long history. It’s believed that the Chihuahua appeared around the 5th century BC! I bet many people aren’t aware that this dog is literally ancient!
They were originally bred as loyal companion dogs.
Being the world’s smallest, the Chihuahua became very popular among paw parents as a type of dog that’s suitable for small living spaces.
And, what’s a better dog for this than a tiny Chihuahua!
These cute little pooches soon became everyone’s favorite companions, and they always take the spotlight wherever they appear.
Size and appearance
The Chihuahua is the smallest dog ever! This dog breed belongs to the toy dog group. Of course, that’s because of their tiny bodies.
The purebred Chihuahua is six to 10 inches tall… or, should I say, short. This small dog is also very light, weighing around three to six pounds on average. Its small and light body makes the little Chihuahua the perfect purse dog that you can carry everywhere!
Not all Chihuahuas look the same. There are seven different types of Chihuahuas:
1. Apple Head Chihuahua
2. Deer Head Chihuahua
3. Pear Head Chihuahua
4. Teacup Chihuahua
5. Short-Haired Chihuahua
6. Long-Haired Chihuahua
7. Fawn Chihuahua
All seven Chihuahua types have different physical traits. You might have noticed the word “head” that’s used to describe the Chihuahua look. That’s because their head is pretty big when compared to their tiny body.
Some Chihuahuas have single-layered coats, while others have double-layered coats. The coat colors vary from black, cream, fawn, chocolate, and white (being the rarest coat color.)
Temperament
Classy and sassy – that’s the perfect way to describe a Chihuahua. Well, it’s almost perfect. We need to add the word “feisty” to it.
The Chihuahua is the classic example of the “small dog – big personality” saying. This dog is very smart to begin with.
Its intelligence, along with its feisty attitude, make the little Chihuahua the tiny boss of everyone. Trust me… you don’t want to make this little fellow angry!
You might be wondering “How can such a big personality fit into such a small dog?” Well, its small size probably has something to do with its specific personality.
We usually see smaller dogs being more bossy, loud, and fierce. At the same time, a small dog like our little Chihuahua is sweet, affectionate, and outgoing.
Despite their attitude, Chihuahuas are dedicated to their owners and love spending time close to them. After all, they were bred as companion dogs!
If this dog was a human, it would probably be that short person that keeps the party going!
Chihuahua Husky Mix: Characteristics Of The Husky-Chi
Photo from: @kimmyambrose
Okay, after describing the parent breeds, we have a clearer picture of how our Chihuahua Husky mix breed will look and act.
There’s just one more important thing I have to mention. Mix breeds are always a doggie lottery. The hybrid dog can inherit both of the parent breed’s traits, but it can also inherit only specific traits from one parent breed.
This completely depends on genetics and how nature plays its role. So, we’re going to describe how most of these hybrid dogs behave and look depending on the parent breed they lean more towards.
Size
Medium-sized dog + small dog = medium- to small-sized dog. Because there’s a huge difference in the body size of the Siberian Husky and the Chihuahua, it’s almost impossible to tell whether the Husky Chi will be super small or a bit larger.
Usually, the Husky Chi’s size ranges between six inches and 15 inches
Generally, this mixed breed has a height of six to 17 inches. Its weight can differ depending on the diet and exercise ratio, but it’s usually around seven to 15 pounds.
If we look at these numbers, we can say that this hybrid dog will be of small size. But, not like teacup small.
Due to its small size, the Husky-Chi is a great dog for small houses and apartments.
Appearance
Close your eyes and imagine a small Siberian Husky with a slightly bigger head and short legs. Well, you’re close to picturing what the Husky-Chi looks like.
The Husky-Chi’s appearance can take on many different forms. And, that is also influenced by genetics.
Compare the Siberian Husky and the Chihuahua and you will think of many combinations their offspring will inherit.
Overall, the Husky-Chi has a very unique appearance. Its fluffy, pointy ears resemble both parent breeds. Large puppy eyes resemble the Chihuahua parent, while coat colors and patterns are usually the Husky parent’s fault!
Eye color
What makes this hybrid dog unique is its eyes! The eyes are big and shiny, painted with lots of different color variations!
We know the Siberian Husky for its beautiful blue eyes. If the Chihuahua Husky mix puppy takes after the Husky parent’s side, there is a huge chance it will also have blue colored eyes.
Chihuahuas usually have brown to dark brown eyes. This pigment belongs to the dominant gene allele. So, most Chihuahua Husky mixes will inherit dark colored eyes.
Although very rare, the Husky-Chi can have two different colored eyes – one being dark brown, and the other light to dark blue. This rare feature is known as “heterochromia”.
Coat colors and types
The Chihuahua Husky mix puppies come in different coat colors and coat types.
If the Husky-Chi puppy inherits more dominant genes from the Husky parent, its coat will be more dense, double-layered, and fluffy.
On the other hand, if the puppy takes on the Chihuahua parent’s genes, it will inherit either a short coat or a long coat. The length of its coat will depend on the Chihuahua parent being a short- or a long-haired type of dog.
When it comes to coat colors, there can be over thirty coat color variations, markings, and patterns.
The Husky-Chi will usually have the coat markings of the Husky parent, but will inherit base colors of the Chihuahua parent. Again, it all depends on the genetics lottery!
It’s a rare breed, so we usually don’t get to see many combinations. Some common coat colors include cream, white and tan, black, black and tan, gray and white, and fawn.
Chihuahua Husky Mix Personality Traits
Photo from: @elliotbenson_muttskies
Not only is the Husky-Chi a beautiful hybrid dog, but it’s also a very interesting little ball of fur. Its personality is very unique.
When a Husky-Chi inherits both parent breed’s personality traits, you get a puppy with the best character.
The Husky-Chi is a friendly dog that loves to meet new human and dog friends. Its outgoing nature makes it the star of the show!
These hybrid dogs are very energetic and active, which is something that is expected considering their parent breeds.
It’s no wonder that the Husky-Chi is very devoted to its owners. Both parent breeds are very fond of their humans, and like to spend lots of time with their family.
Despite its small size, the Husky-Chi can be a great watchdog. If it inherits more of the Chihuahua parent’s personality traits, it can be wary of strangers.
Most unwanted personality traits in parent breeds, such as the stubbornness of a Husky and the ferocity of a Chihuahua, can be basically absent in this mixed breed.
But, these traits can also be brought out to a certain level depending on which parent breed the Husky-Chi took after.
Grooming And Maintenance
Siberian Huskies are seasonal shedders. This means they’ll shed a lot, but only during drastic changes of weather.
Chihuahuas, on the other hand, shed throughout the whole year. But, they don’t shed too much.
Dog shedding is a normal process, and you can’t expect a dog not to shed. Shedding also greatly depends on the dog’s coat length, as well as the number of coat layers.
So, now you have a mix of these two occasional and moderate shedders. The Chihuahua Husky mix puppy will probably shed every day, but not in a huge amount.
As a new owner of the Husky-Chi, you should invest in a quality dog brush and safe dog shampoo.
Brushing your Husky-Chi’s coat each day will help keep its shine, and it will also reduce the shedding.
This hybrid dog doesn’t require daily bathing. Frequent baths can cause damage to your dog’s skin, drying it out and making the hair weak.
So, bathe your Husky-Chi when you feel the need to – after a long day of exercise, walking in dirty terrain, and so on.
Socialization And Training
Photo from: @elliotbenson_muttskies
Training the Husky-Chi should be relatively easy. Both parent breeds are extremely intelligent dogs, so their offspring will surely be a genius puppy!
During the first year of life, it’s important to socialize this hybrid dog. Early socialization is beneficial to both the owner and the dog.
Through the socialization process, the Husky-Chi puppy will learn to get along with other animals and humans. It will have an easier approach to new dog friends, and you won’t have a tough time trying to prevent it from chasing small animals and small children.
Along with socialization, obedience training is a must. You have to teach your Husky-Chi to respond to your commands. These commands can be as simple as “SIT” and “STAY”.
The Chihuahua Husky mix puppy must learn right from wrong. With regular obedience training, followed by positive reinforcement, your puppy will be the best-behaved pooch!
There’s one funny thing about the Chihuahua. Although it’s very intelligent and quick to learn a lot of things, the Chihuahua has difficulties with potty training.
No one is quite sure why the Chihuahua has anxiety when pooping outside. Let’s just accept the fact that the Chihuahua is a shy pooper.
So, if your Husky-Chi inherits this particular personality trait from its Chihuahua parent, make sure to award it with a treat during successful potty training.
Physical activity
Physical activity is very important for all dogs. This hybrid dog has lots of excess energy, and you will have to meet its needs.
The Husky-Chi needs a lot of space to run and play. Now, this doesn’t mean that you need to buy a house with a garden for your beloved pooch. What it means is that you have to take your Husky-Chi outside two to three times a day.
Dog toys make the perfect tools for quality playtime. You can find many different dog toys on Amazon or in licensed pet stores. They’ll make your Husky-Chi puppy happy and active!
Some dog toys can also induce good mental activity. Alongside physical activity, mental activity plays an important role in a dog’s life.
If you’re thinking about leaving this dog alone in the apartment for some time, that’s probably a bad idea.
The Husky-Chi is prone to developing separation anxiety if its owner isn’t close by for some time. Leaving your dog alone for a whole day might trigger this condition.
Sooner or later, the dog will start to demolish everything in the apartment: the couch, pillows, dog toys, food bowls, etc.
This behavior is caused by an upset Husky-Chi that is bored and lonely. So, keep this in mind because it can play a huge role in the development of your Chihuahua Husky mix puppy.
Food And Nutrition
The Husky-Chi is a small dog that doesn’t require large portions of dog food. It’s important to feed your growing puppy up to three times per day.
The adult, active Husky-Chi will need around 300 calories per day.
As it gets older, the Husky-Chi will require two meals per day – one in the morning and one in the evening.
Make sure to get high-quality dog food from certified pet stores. Combining dry kibble and wet food throughout the day might cause stomach problems for your Husky-Chi puppy.
Don’t give it too many treats, snacks, and fatty foods. Considering its Chihuahua parent is prone to obesity, the Husky-Chi might inherit this trait.
Chihuahua Husky Mix: Health Problems
All dogs face health issues in some period of their life. While many purebred dogs have inherited health issues, most mixed breeds are very healthy dogs.
The Chihuahua Husky mix can inherit some health problems either from the Husky parent or from the Chihuahua parent, or from both.
The Siberian Husky is a relatively healthy purebred dog. On the other hand, the Chihuahua has more health issues.
This doesn’t ultimately mean that the Husky-Chi will inherit some major health issues. But, there are a few health problems that a new owner should be aware of:
• heart diseases
• hypoglycemia
• hypothyroidism
• luxating patella
• progressive retinal atrophy
• cataracts
• collapsing trachea
• hip dysplasia
Since the Husky-Chi is a very rare breed, there hasn’t been much information about its overall health condition. Most owners say that their Chihuahua Husky hybrid dogs were very healthy during their life.
By doing your research on the health issues of the Husky-Chi’s parent breeds, you’ll know how to notice signs of illness in your dog.
Make sure to take your four-legged friend on regular vet checkups, treatments, and vaccinations.
Husky-Chi Lifespan
It seems like there’s some sort of rule in the canine world – the smaller the dog, the longer its lifespan.
This is particularly seen in Chihuahuas. The Chihuahua parent breed’s life expectancy is up to 20 years. When compared to other dog breeds, that’s quite a lot. It might be the longest living dog breed among all breeds.
The Siberian Husky parent also has a long lifespan. These sled dogs can live up to 15 years of age.
So, what about the Chihuahua Husky mix puppy?
This hybrid dog has an average lifespan of 12 to 16 years. Bear in mind that this is just an estimated life expectancy.
Your dog’s lifespan will depend on its health condition. In other words, the healthier the puppy, the longer its life will be.
Chihuahua Husky Mix Cost
Most Siberian Husky mixes cost anywhere from $400 to $800. Chihuahua mixes might cost a bit more, ranging from $500 to $1200.
Considering the difficult mating process, and that the Chihuahua Husky mix is a rare crossbreed, it might be a bit pricey. So, if you can find one, its price would range between $500 and $2000.
The price will depend on the breeders, as well as the area you’re getting your puppy from. These hybrid dogs aren’t recognized by the AKC (American Kennel Club), so don’t expect to get a puppy with a pedigree.
Where Can I Get A Chihuahua Husky Mix?
It’s best to get your Chihuahua Husky mix from reputable breeders. You can also look for Siberian Husky breeders and Chihuahua breeders as they might cross their dogs with other breeds.
You should avoid puppy mills and pet stores because they usually prefer quantity over quality. This means that they don’t pay much attention to the dog’s wellbeing and health. Most puppy mills will sell dogs for low prices because they want to sell many of them.
Shelters are also great for finding mixed breed dogs. You can find both puppies and adults at dog shelters. But, considering that the Husky-Chi is so rare, you’ll have to be very lucky to find one in a shelter.
Final Thoughts: Is A Chihuahua Husky Mix A Good Choice For Me?
Photo from: @elliotbenson_muttskies
The Chihuahua Husky mix is a great little hybrid that’s suitable for families with older children. Like every dog, the Husky-Chi will have its good days and its not-so-good days. If you’re a first-time dog owner, the Chihuahua Husky mix puppy might present a challenge for you.
The Chihuahua Husky mix is a good choice because…
• The Husky-Chi inherited amazing personality traits from its parent breeds. This is a loving, affectionate family dog that will do its best to please and protect its loved ones. Despite its small size, this dog can protect the whole household!
• If you’re looking for a fun and loyal companion dog, then you should consider getting the Chihuahua Husky mix. This lovable pooch will love to be by your side! It will be happy as long as you provide it with quality playtime and exercise.
• This is a small dog and it’s great for small apartments as it doesn’t require a lot of living space. Their small size can also come in handy when you want to take them traveling. They fit everywhere!
• The Husky-Chi will be your loving companion dog for a long time. Its life expectancy is far greater than in other dog breeds. Health issues are not very common in this hybrid dog.
• If you’re an active person who loves adventures, whether you’re going to the park or to the mountain, the Husky-Chi will follow!
The Chihuahua Husky Mix isn’t a good choice because…
• This dog might inherit a strong prey drive from its Husky parent, combined with the feisty attitude of a Chihuahua. What could happen is that the Husky-Chi might chase small children and prey-like animals. This isn’t considered aggressive behavior – it’s just lack of socialization mixed with the dog’s high energy levels and inherited instincts.
• If you’re suffering from allergies, then this hybrid dog is not for you. Both the Chihuahua and the Siberian Husky are not hypoallergenic dogs, so their offspring won’t be either.
• This hybrid dog can be very stubborn. Although highly trainable, sometimes it won’t listen to you nor anyone else. Some owners might find this behavior annoying to the extent that they consider giving the dog up for adoption.
So, don’t be like one of those owners. Do a lot of research before deciding to get a new puppy.
• If you’re a busy person who can’t find the time to hang out with your new puppy, you shouldn’t consider getting one. Before getting a new puppy, ask yourself if you’re ready to give it everything it needs, and that includes your time, patience and most importantly – love!
We hope this article helped you learn about the wonderful traits of the Chihuahua Husky mix. If you’re considering getting a Husky-Chi, this guide is a good point to start from. So, whether you decide to get this hybrid dog or not, one thing is for certain – the Husky-Chi will make an amazing addition to your family!
