Ask any seasoned traveler to recommend must-visit destinations, and India frequently tops the list. Renowned for its vibrant cuisine, rich history, diverse culture, and sacred temples, the country holds a special place in many bucket lists. Adding to this allure is an extraordinary landmark—a colossal eagle sculpture inspired by ancient mythology. This remarkable creation, envisioned and brought to life by acclaimed filmmaker and artist Rajiv Anchal, is located in Kerala’s Jatayu Earth Centre and has become one of India’s most captivating attractions.
The sculpture, a dedication to the Hindu epic Ramayana, tells the story of Jatayu, a heroic eagle who fell while valiantly battling the demon Ravana to save the goddess Sita. For years, this tale has been cherished by the residents of Chadayamangalam village in Kerala’s Kollam district. Now, Anchal’s masterpiece has resurrected this myth in a form that inspires awe and reverence.
Standing as the largest bird sculpture in the world, the structure spans an impressive 200 feet from tail to head and is perched atop the 1,000-foot-high Jatayupara towers. The project, which took over a decade to complete, showcases Anchal’s vision and dedication. The artist first conceived the idea in the 1980s during his Fine Arts College days, presenting the concept to the Department of Tourism. Though it took decades to materialize, his dream is now a monumental reality.
More than just a marvel of art, the sculpture emphasizes a universal message. Anchal has been careful to maintain the monument as a cultural rather than religious symbol. He explains, “Jatayu died protecting a woman’s honor, and that is what the sculpture stands for. People of all faiths have contributed to the project and will visit it. My work is for everyone. For those seeking religion, there’s an ancient temple outside the compound.”
The Jatayu Earth Centre offers much more than its centerpiece sculpture. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, including rock climbing, rappelling, paintball, and rifle shooting. The area also boasts an Ayurvedic resort and a museum, making it a destination that blends adventure, relaxation, and cultural immersion.
This awe-inspiring sculpture not only highlights India’s artistic and mythological heritage but also serves as a reminder of universal values like courage and honor. It stands as a testament to the power of perseverance, creativity, and the rich stories that connect humanity. Whether you’re drawn by the mythology, the breathtaking artistry, or the promise of adventure, Jatayu Earth Centre is a destination that truly embodies the magic of India.
