Driving his kid off to school, a man noticed the local pup, Sugar Snap, severely emaciated and lying on the side of the road, desperately asking passers-by for help.
Stopping his car, he got out and ran to the dog, carefully picked him up, and brought him to the nearest Chicago police station, hoping that they would know what to do.
Luckily, the police officers quickly contacted the local animal shelter and informed them of Sugar Snap’s situation. Being instructed to bring him into the care of Chicago Animal Care and Control as soon as possible, the devoted officers carefully placed the pup into their car and drove him off to the shelter.
Long Road To Recovery
However, after being assessed by their medical team, they decided it would be best for him to be transmitted to Chicago Animal Rescue, One Tail at a Time.
As soon as they took him in their care, the staff members conducted a thorough examination, which helped them notice that Sugar Snap wasn’t able to walk or even stand up on his own.
But as soon as they offered him some yummy food, his entire body perked up – a clear sign that this pup was far from giving up!
They immediately set him up for treatment that was founded by the generous hoomans who supported their incredible cause.
He received a transfusion which helped improve his vitals and pick up his energy.
“His vet team is adding new meds to his treatment plan and continues to do everything they can for him while keeping him comfortable. He’s in excellent hands,” One Tail at a Time wrote on Facebook.
Even though Sugar Snap did have one hard night, his blood pressure and blood glucose dropped. But as soon as he was given a blood transfusion and some more food, he felt much better.
“Some of his values dropped on Sunday which was alarming, so his veterinary team came up with a plan that included an NG tube and blood transfusion,” they wrote in an update.
After some time, Sugar Snap was feeling much better, so the vet team decided to remove his feeding tube, hoping that he would keep gaining weight all on his own.
And he did!
Sugar Snap was so determined to get better that he not only gained weight, but also started walking.
Seeing his incredible improvement, the staff knew he was ready for a foster home.
“Today, after three weeks, Sugar Snap left the emergency hospital walking on his own. He will go to foster with one of the veterinarians who treated him, where he will continue to get healthy and strong,” the rescue wrote on a Facebook post.
New Life
Seeing how good it was to live in a happy and loving home, Sugar Snap was overjoyed.
His health improved with every passing day, allowing him to transform into the handsome boy he had been all along.
“We’re celebrating two weeks in foster and happy to report he’s weighing in at nearly 34lbs, is more mobile than ever, and has even learned how to beg for food. Can you believe this is the same dog?!” they wrote.
Within a month, Sugar Snap looked like a brand-new dog! He weighed double what he did when he was rescued—going from 19 lbs to a whopping 40 lbs!
Seeing just how determined he was to get better and find himself a loving home, his foster mom decided that she wasn’t really ready to part ways with him, so she adopted him.
He is now living his best life ever, surrounded not only by loving hoomans but by incredible furry siblings, too.
“Sugar now has a dog brother, Fitz, and a cat brother, Noodle. Not only is his mom a vet, but his dad too! We truly couldn’t have asked for a happier ending for this lucky Chicago stray,” the One Tail at a Time concluded.
