Every dog’s biggest dream in life is a warm home and a loving family. Unfortunately, not every canine is lucky enough to be in that position, so most of them are forced to fend for themselves on the street or spend their days in a shelter.
There are, however, dogs that have spent most of their lives in an imperfect home only to end up in a shelter afterward. This is exactly what happened to one dog whose life was not easy at all, and it became even more difficult when he suddenly found himself behind kennel bars.
However, this dog was lucky because he was quickly found by a man who decided to give him all his love. How much it meant to him can perhaps best be seen in their first picture together.
Born For Each Other
It was not easy for Porter, a four-year-old Chocolate Labrador, when he came to the Animal Protective Foundation, a rescue organization located in Glenville, New York. Even more, his life up to that point was not at all easy regardless of having a home.
“He was a service dog for a woman who is now not well enough to take care of him,” James Hathaway told Newsweek. “He would warn her about seizures and then protect her when they happened.”
James Hathaway is the president of the Vermont and Northeast New York chapters of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. During the period when Porter ended up in the shelter, he was looking for a dog, and when he saw Porter, he immediately knew that he was the right one.
That certainly wasn’t a coincidence because James had been looking for a dog that looked like his recently-deceased Chocolate Lab, Addie.
“I couldn’t believe my luck to find a chocolate like my sweet girl. I went to the shelter a half-hour before they opened. He ran to me wagging his tail, and I adopted him minutes later,” James happily stated.
These two took a picture together, and you can clearly see the immense happiness on their faces, especially Porter’s. They were definitely born for each other.
Everyone Was Delighted
James confirmed that Porter is doing great in his new home and that he even has a new job, which he is accomplishing well.
“He’s doing great and, as I am the CEO of two Make-A-Wish chapters, his new job will be going to work every day with me and greeting wish kids dreaming up their wishes just like my girl Addie did for nearly 10 years,” James said.
James wanted to show his new adorable doggo to other people, so he shared their photo together on Reddit under the handle, u/MartianSlingshot, and wrote: “Porter is derping hard in our first pic together after I adopted him at the shelter.”
Redditors were delighted, and even James himself was surprised at how much attention this post generated. “I didn’t expect it to explode as it did, but everywhere I go with Porter, he is celebrated and loved and he deserves it,” James concluded.
We, on the other hand, hope that it won’t stop there, but that this post will motivate other people to go to their local shelters and take more pictures together with happy and smiling dogs going to their new homes.
